Topic:

Soil Vapor Surveys per SAM and DTSC: Installation, Sampling, and Analytical Considerations

Abstract:

As environmental professionals in San Diego, it is important for consultants and their subcontractors to have an understanding of the various regulations that can apply to soil vapor surveys being performed within San Diego County. Recognizing the differences between the SAM Manual and the DTSC Active Soil Gas Investigations Advisory is necessary in order to execute a soil vapor survey properly. Many of the differences between the two documents are found in the installation, sampling, and analytical steps of a soil vapor assessment. This presentation is a summary of the approaches and how they apply to not only the SAM and DTSC guidance documents, but also how they can apply when a regulatory agency is not involved. Although certain agencies have preferences and suggestions for the installation, sampling, and analysis of soil vapor samples, the chosen procedures should be based on data quality objectives and site specific conditions.
