Ecological Solutions for Urban Water Quality

Abstract:

The rapid development of southern California has drastically changed the ecology of the landscape. Where unique habitats and streams once flourished, some renowned monuments of modernization stand in their place; efficient and accessible transit, beautiful architecture and expanding industry. With the benefits of modern systems come some environmental drawbacks, including increased production and concentration of pollutants. As we come to address these problems we should look to nature for help. Ecological processes will not only assist cleansing urban runoff, but will provide park space, reduce greenhouse gases and urban heat island effects, recharge groundwater, reduce flooding and provide native habitat, while distributing costs across departments and municipalities. The process of mitigating the costs of urban development creates opportunities for environmental professionals in every field, from water quality assessment and modeling to urban planning and project design.
