    2012 SURF Sustainability Symposium

     

    DATE: January 31st to February 2nd, 2012

    Event Details:

    Bringing together a broad range of viewpoints, approaches and topics, the Sustainable Remediation Forum (SURF, www.sustainableremediation.org) and partnering organizations invite you to partake in compelling discussions and presentations about the fast developing field of sustainable remediation and its emerging relationship with sustainable redevelopment.

    Proposed Agenda:

    1. Day 1 (January 31) – Broad-ranging sustainability symposium coordinated by SURF and with participation from regional and national organizations
    2. Day 2-3 (February 1-2) – SURF’s annual meeting; case studies and further exploration of the themes and discussions of Day 1; all participants welcome

    Presentations and Panel Discussions:

    1. Keynote speaker Scott Peters, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners, Port of San Diego
    2. Overview of the state of sustainable remediation
    3. What does sustainable remediation mean to the different participating organizations (including industry, government, academic and regulatory representatives)?
    4. Relationship between sustainable remediation and sustainable redevelopment
    5. Can remediation and redevelopment practitioners work more closely together?
    6. How can different professional organizations achieve a common vision for sustainability?
    7. Examples of sustainable remediation performed collaboratively by industry, regulatory agency representatives and other stakeholders

    Speaker Information:

    Robert Russell is a member of Procopio's Real Estate and Environmental Law Team. His practice focuses on environmental and insurance matters in California and Nevada. He has represented numerous landowners, developers and business operators in matters involving contamination and permitting issues.

    Stephen Marsh is chair of the Environmental practice group at Luce Forward and chair of the firm's E-Discovery Committee. Mr. Marsh specializes in hazardous waste and toxic tort litigation, including underground storage tanks, CERCLA, RCRA and cost recovery matters; Proposition 65; consumer product safety laws; insurance coverage counseling and litigation related to environmental claims; coordination of site assessments and remediation with consultants and regulatory agencies; stormwater compliance; Brownfields redevelopment; climate change issues; and, advising businesses and property owners on these and related issues in connection with corporate and real estate purchasing, leasing and financing.

    Suzanne R. Varco is the managing partner of Opper & Varco LLP in San Diego. Ms. Varco’s private law practice concentrates in areas of brownfields’ redevelopment, hazardous waste cleanup, environmental, real estate transactions involving environmental issues, environmental permitting, underground storage tank issues, CEQA compliance and litigation, and environmental litigation. Ms. Varco has extensive experience working with local, state and federal regulatory agencies.
